NIKKI APPEL AWARDED THE FORENSIC SCIENCE FOUNDATION STUDENT TRAVEL GRANT 

December 2023

Nikki Appel was awarded the Forensic Science Foundation Student Travel Grant. This grant funds her travel to the American Academy of Forensic Science Conference in Denver in February 2024.

Second Place Poster Prize Awarded to Jasmine Hernandez at the Coloquio Internacional de Antropología Física Juan Comas 

November 2023

Jasmine Hernandez was awarded the first runner-up prize at the Colloquium Juan Comas in Mexico City for her poster 

A histological investigation on the influence of the interosseous membrane attachment at the ulnar midshaft cortex.

HANNAH CANTRELL AWARDED THE ALBERT A. DAHLBERG PRIZE

The Dental Anthropology Association awards the Albert A. Dahlberg Prize for the best student paper. This year the award went to our very own Hannah Cantrell.

ANNA RAUTMAN SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS HER DISSERTATION

November 2021

Graduate student Anna Rautman successfully defended her dissertation on tradeoffs between growth and development of the dental and skeletal systems.

Dr. Heather Edgar’s work expands the number of CT scans available for researchers looking to make positive identifications of deceased people. The sample size in a widely used database is woefully inadequate, leading to delays and in some cases misidentifications of a person’s population affinity.

HANNAH CANTRELL ACCEPTED INTO THE MCNAIR PROGRAM

June 2021

The McNair program here at UNM accepts high achieving undergraduate students interested in pursuing Master's or Doctoral degrees.  The program allows students to conduct research with faculty mentors in preparation for graduate school.  Our lab member, Hannah Cantrell, was accepted into the program and is now in the early stages of her research.

U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich visited the Office of Medical Investigator (OMI) at The University of New Mexico to see the work being done by forensic anthropologist Heather Edgar and her team to improve the identification of Native American remains and resolve missing persons cases
